Tragedy, Trauma and Triumph: School Social Work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The “triumph” during these last two school years was found in the little victories that I witnessed. I found myself falling back on the basics of social work, breaking down barriers, respecting the client and family, looking at situations that were fraught with difficulty, and continually finding new ways to help students succeed.

Schools should not have to worry about finding resources that would be acceptable to their team members to read or use, particularly those that require translation to secondary school language. My co-authors and I understand the dilemma. We spent years trying to find examples and approaches that would be useful for secondary settings. Adolescence is a profoundly important time in human life that can set trajectories of health and wellness throughout the lifetime (Sawyer et al., 2012), and creating safe and affirming schools is an important starting point to make a positive change for transgender and gender nonbinary people in society at large. My dissertation examines the schooling experiences of transgender and gender nonbinary students and offers evidence-based recommendations on how to create affirming schools for this youth demographic. Here are my top 5 recommendations on how to do this.
